Chapters 2-6

You made it through 4 chapters in one week, and hopefully you were able to learn a lot of new information about Katniss, the Capitol and the upcoming Hunger Games. I will highlight a few main ideas that will be important as we continue to read the book, and then I will ask you to comment on some detailed information that was presented in these chapters.

In Chapter 2, Katniss volunteers to take Prim's place at the Hunger Games. The boy from District 12 is also chosen: Peeta Mellark. Katniss has a special relationship to Peeta, but has never really spoken to him.

In Chapter 3, Katniss is placed in a room and given one hour to say goodbye to those she loves. Then, she is put on a train with Peeta, Haymitch and Effie and taken to the Capitol.

In Chapter 4, Katniss and Peeta have a confrontation with Haymitch, and at the end of the chapter, they arrive at the Capitol.

In Chapter 5, Katniss and Peeta are given makeovers by Cinna and Portia at the Capitol and prepared for the opening ceremonies. They ride in on their chariot holding hands.

In Chapter 6, Effie, Haymitch, Cinna, and Portia seem to be very happy with how many people noticed Katniss and Peeta from District 12 with their flaming capes. In this chapter, we also learn what an Avox is and the story behind how Katniss recognized the Avox that was serving them where they were staying.

These four chapters introduce many new things to us.  They explain many important differences between the Capitol and the Districts as well as give us an insight to the different characters we encounter.  Below are some questions.

DIRECTIONS: Choose two questions to answer this week, and write 5 sentences to answer each one. Your responses are due 1/27/13 by midnight!

1. What is the hand gesture that the people of District 12 give Katniss when she volunteers as tribute in place of her sister? Why do they do this hand gesture? Also, what effect does this gesture have on Katniss?

2. There are different times in these chapters when Katniss explains that is important she try not to cry. If the people saw her cry, what might they think? Would these thoughts be good or bad for her success in the Hunger Games? Why or why not?

3. Even though Katniss has never really spoken to Peeta, she has a special relationship with him.  Describe this relationship. Is this relationship helpful for a fight to the death or it is harmful? Why?

4. Before Katniss leaves for the Capitol, Madge gives her a pin.  What kind of animal in on the pin?  Explain the history of this animal and how the symbol of this animal makes fun of the Capitol.

5. Who is Haymitch? What is Haymitch's job in helping Katniss and Peeta? Explain the confrontation (fight) that Peeta and Katniss have with Haymitch. Also, explain how this fight encourages Haymitch to help them.

6. What is an Avox?  How does Katniss know the Avox that serves them cake at dinner in Chapter 6?

  1. 5. Haymitch is a man on the train who agreed to help Katniss and Beeta. Also, he knew about the hunger game, he has won the game before. On the first time when Katniss and Beeta saw him, he was doesn't care and he wants to drink wine. They had to talk to him to encourage him, so they did. He impressed by the Katniss courage so he decided to help them. His job is to help Katniss and Beeta and give them some advice to the game.

    6. An Avox is a girl who committed a crime. the people in the Capitol called her traitor. She serve the people in the dining room. Also, they have had cut her tongue. She probably a girl from district 12 because, Katniss has saw her in district 12 while she and her friend Gale hunting. So, Katniss recognized her when she saw her serve them.

  3. Haymitch Abernathy is Katniss and Peeta's mentor in The Hunger Games. His job is to manage their sponsor gifts and work out their strategies in the arena. The fight between them, Katniss and Peeta were talking with Haymitch because they want him to teach them how to survive the hunger games. Haymitch drinks a lot so he can't teach them. Haymitch sees they rely want to learn the fight, then he decides to teach them.

An Avox is a person who has been punished for rebelling against the Capitol a traitor or runaway. Avoxes have had their tongues cut out, rendering them unable to speak. Katniss knows the red-headed avox girl because once, when she was hunting with Gale outside district 12, she saw the avox girl running with a boy in the woods. They had escaped from the Capitol and were running from the Capitol's aircraft. Katniss and Gale witness the boy being shot dead and the girl being captured. In the end, Katniss didn't help hide them in the woods and now she feels guilty. The avox girl had her tongue cut off and was forced to serve the Capitol as her punishment.

  5. 1- the hand gesture was the three middle fingers of the left hand to their lips. It an old sign. It means thanks and good bey to someone you love. that is uncommon in district 12.she surprised because she didn't expect the people who live in her district care about her.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------

2- she didn't like to cry because there were cameras show up every things. she thought if i cry that will give the others good feeling because that means i am an easy target to kill.she don't want to give any one that she is an easy target. I think that is a good decision to be a strong girl in their minds. that will be helpful to put them away from her.

  6. 1-they touch the three middle fingers of their left hand to their lips and hold it to her .
it means thanks, it means admiration, it means ''good bye for someone you love ''
she is truly in danger of crying, she is grateful
    I think that stimulate her

4-It's a small bird. The capitol bred a series of genetically altered animals as weapons, some of them ability to memorize and repeat human conversation and released into regions where the enemies, it took people awhile to realize what was going on the districs . then the rebels fed the capitol endless lies and the joke was on it so they know what that mean

  7. 3*The relationship between Katniss and Peeta is a complicated one. Peeta falls in love with Katniss from the first time he hears her sing, but I think Katniss and Peeta are being forced to act like friends, and pretend to be happy together in the public eye. In my opinion this relationship between Peeta and Katniss is harmful if only one person will win the game but, if they win the game it will helpful because they will help each other.

6*An Avox is like a traitor to the Capitol. They usually commited crimes or displeased the Capitol they have their tongues cut off and waited on the tributes. Katniss recognized an Avox waiting on her as a girl back in District 12 she witnessed captured while trying to escape from the disctrcit. They are like slaves, basically

  8. The relationship between katniss and peeta is a classmate in the school. but they haven't met each other after the school. but katniss has a good feeling to hem. because there are from the same district. i think the relationship that between them has to odds. the first one is that will be harmful because she was thinking about hem how she can fight hem and she concern about how will the situation be. but the another odd is helpful. because they can help each other.

    ===========================================

the pin has a bird symbol. but i don't know why that is funny. and the bird has a modern technology. it has a recorder can record the conversation. and the capitol use that to know what is going on all districts.

    1. The bird on the pin is funny because the people of the districts quickly learned that the birds were repeating their conversations to people in the Capitol. Then, the people of the districts began to say things that weren't true to fool the people in the Capitol, so the Capitol failed.
